It is lunchtime - so I shall ramble although I haven't actually thought of anything to talk about.

I am reading a funny book at the moment which causes me to burst into silly giggles on the bus. This leads to occasional funny looks. A sense of humour is a quite weird thing though. You can find it even when you shouldn't, or don't want to. The other night after the great atm scam I was lying in bed in tears, and suddenly thought of one thing that was quite funny and ended up sniggering to myself.

One of my favourite bits in my book (that I got to this morning) was where the hero is desperately depending on not getting into any more trouble, and needs to look cool and inconspicuous. He then slips in the snow as he's trying to get on a bus and ends up underneath the bus, covered in oil, with his clothes ripped. He looks down at himself and then "he giggled hysterically for a second and then clapped his hand over his mouth."
I love that line. It makes me giggle hysterically, funnily enough.

They say that laughter is a primal form of self protection - it identifies you as Not Threatening. And also reduces you to Not Threatening too, both physically and mentally.
I also have a weird pain/giggling response. I once had a piece of glass in my foot that Carl was trying to remove, and I laughed so much that my sides were aching. Presumably the chemicals released when you laugh were intended to help the pain and shock.

We probably have lots of chemical and primal tricks that we've forgotten about, though. In fact I wonder if we've forgotten most of our natural responses. Like giving birth, why do women need a team of doctors, but giraffes just get on with it?
Why do ants 'know what they're doing' and we need teaching and guidance? Why has that snail been on my front door for three weeks in the same spot? What the hell does it think about?

Ah look, just when I become too deep it's time to go back to work.......
